The Las Vegas oddmakers now have Tiger Woods as a 4:1 favorite to win at Augusta. After seeing his performance at Bay Hill last weekend, chances are that is a good bet.

What did you see in his swing that gave him so much confidence? Here are a couple of my observations from the couch.

His alignment was right on. Talking about his shoulders. In the past couple of times I have seen Tiger’s swing break down in a tournament it was obvious his shoulders were aligned well to the left of his target – and that is where is ball ended up each time.

His tempo and pace were much better. Look at the tempo of his swing now versus a while back when it appeared he was trying to knock the cover off the ball on every shot. The timing of the swing was much better, creating better balance and confidence to swing ‘within himself’.

Lastly, he smiled a lot more. It seemed like a lot of pressure was off for some reason. Maybe he knew all along he would be wearing the jacket at the end of the day, but it was obvious he was having a better time out there.

So who will win at Augusta this year? It is very likely to be that guy in red on Sunday.

Who loves Augusta as much as I do? Absolutely no one.

Sergio Garcia Golf Swing

Sergio Garcia keeps himself in the spotlight in the Thailand Golf Championship.

During the first round on the 8th hole, he launched his tee shot into the lake. After teeing up a second shot, he just misses the green. So long to that club……..well, see for yourself!

That is one way of making the news on an otherwise lack luster performance.

What do you think of his antics?

Tony Simpson PGA golf instructor

has great tips and tricks for you on how to

plan your strategy on the golf course.

Manage how you play a course. Who is ‘Old Man Par’? On the course, he is your biggest opponent! Why? Even though you may be playing against your buddies, you are also playing against the course.

Course designers challenge players with bunkers, rough, water, trees, and any thing else they can find in their arsenal to rob you of a shot. It’s what makes every course one of a kind and a challenge to play.

One course that will bring seasoned player to their knees is Whistling Straights Kohler Wi   http://www.americanclubresort.com/golf/ws   Check it out.

Tampa Clearwater Golf Lesson, Course Management

Martin Kaymer won the 2010 PGA us PGA Championship in a 3-way tie play-off with Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. On the final hole Johnson grounded his club on bare soil where his ball was lying and officials (arguable) ruled it a bunker. Watson pitched his ball into water. Both suffered penalty strokes. The course robbed them!

Use all the available information to plan your strategy for each hole

Score Card – check distances, par, and hole layout

Tee Markers

Tee boxes may be pointing you toward a hazard and away from the fairway. Always step back and asses what your shot should be. The designer may have been trying to steal another shot from you!

Finding a good golf coach in the Tampa Clearwater area just got easier.

You too can benefit my from ‘customized to you’ golf coaching

What do you search for in a golf coach or someone you depend on to elevate the play of your game? Why do you believe most tour players have swing coaches who follow them to the tournaments?

Finding someone who knows the in’s and out’s of your golf swing can take time. Isn’t it nice, though, when you can depend on a golf coach to get you back on track when the ball striking is not solid.

If you have taken a lot of golf lessons you will testify you may have learned a little from each one of them. If there were any who improved your overall game or knowledge they must be the ‘type’ of instructor you prefer.

We all learn differently, and when it comes down to it, teach differently. An instructor who teaches only one method misses the advantages that come from any other methods.

As we learn differently, we all swing differently.

So finding an instructor you have chemistry with may also reveal the one who teaches with your preferred learning style.

How do you prefer to learn?

Watch a video? See the instructor demonstrate, listen to the instructor’s explanation, do an exercise that promotes proper movements?

A good instructor will use all methods to help you see and feel the proper movements through: Auditory, Visual, Kinesthetic

So does your instructor just stand there and talk to you – or hit balls – or better yet, sit in a chair? Did they check your golf equipment?

Create a plan to improve your golf with your local PGA Professional.

Working with all levels of golfers on my practice tee – it does not matter which level – we try to achieve at least a few shot where you go “Ah ha. That’s it.” I believe if you can do it once you can do it again. You have just experienced what I am teaching.

We hope those Ah ha shots are more frequent than otherwise – but in those shots we all must find the 2-3 things we did correctly to allow us to make that Ah ha swing.

In most Ah ha swings we have allowed our hands to move correctly – creating power and a sense of ‘somewhere to go’ at the top of the swing.

Same for the body – which has to have turned behind an imaginary line which would be vertical from the point of intended impact. We must have ‘somewhere to go’.

To give you an example – these are the two thoughts I must have to hit a great golf shot: 1) I must keep my club on plane going back by doing nothing with my hands and 2) I feel like I coil my body horizontal or level with the ground.

From there I can swing as hard as I want. But that is just because I have found that position.

These triggers or key thoughts for you we hope are as early in the swing as possible. Preferably from the first move. If you are not hitting shots like you want – look at the first move you make.

So find one or two things that you feel you can do and identify with when you hit a good shot. Then they are like buttons and behavioral controls you can use – especially under pressure.

If this helps you there is much more. Tony Simpson, PGA is a professional golf instructor at Chi Chi Sports Complex www.chichi.org. in Clearwater / Tampa Bay, Florida.
